Unique or hard to find features:

Inform! is not the only multimedia document authoring system. There are a number of others available. Microsoft PowerPoint, CRE:8, and NeoBook are among them.

Each one has features the others do not. PowerPoint lets you see thumbnails of your slides, Inform! doesn't. NeoBook has a built in macro language, Inform! doesn't, and neither does PowerPoint.

Inform! has a number of features the others don't. These are discussed below, and we think you'll like what we have.

  • Price: At $15.00, Inform! is only about 1/10 the cost of CRE:8, NeoBook or PowerPoint.

  • Work with multiple files: Inform! lets you select, or drag and drop multiple digital images to create multiple consecutive pages with one image as background to each page. You can create a photo album in seconds. Moreover, the page you drop your images on is used as a template for all other pages created, so whatever objects you have on the first page will also appear on all pages created.

You can also select or drag and drop multiple images to place multiple images on the same page. The images are stacked on top of each other and simply have to be moved to where you want them.

Say you have six or eight images you want to associate with entries in a combo box. Just put a combo box on your page and drag and drop the pictures on it. An entry for each picture is created using the file name as the entry text and the picture is associated with it.

  • No file left behind: Inform! documents can contain ANY file – databases, word documents, spread sheets, even programs. When accessed, a program is run, or a file is opened in its own program.

  • Outlines/indexes: Inform! supports not one but multiple outlines and indexes.

  • Retrieve all files used in a document: Any file imported into your document can be saved back to disk in both the document designer and the document reviewer.

  • Unique audio/video capability: Import an audio or video file once and use it many times throughout the document. Play a segment on one page and the same or different segment on another page. For each use of an audio or video file you can specify a segment or scene to play, and a number of times to play it.

You can size and position video windows on your page. Play multiple files at once – you can lower the volume of a video file and use a separate audio file as narration or accompaniment

  • Show digital images at size: You can enlarge or shrink images you place on a page. But any time you want, you can view the image at its actual size in its own window.

  • Show background images only: When you use an image as background to a page, you can place labels, text boxes, and other images on top of it. But if you want your viewers to be able to see the whole background picture without obstruction, you can turn this feature on. Viewers can then press a key to make all foreground items disappear. Press the key again, and foreground items are redrawn.

  • Slide shows: Slide shows can be set to repeat play indefinitely. Stops only when Esc key is pressed. Last page in a slide show can be made to force any other page in document to be displayed when slide duration is reached.

Above makes it possible to have multiple slide shows accessed from a table of contents on a single page. When finished, each slide show jumps back to the table of contents page.

A video file’s duration (or the duration of a segment you have chosen) can be used as the duration of the slide. This makes it possible to incorporate videos or segments of a video into a slide show – You can thus play different scenes of a video on different pages or slides in your document, and display the video segments with accompanying text and photos.

  • Secure documents: All documents are fully encrypted using the same Microsoft encryption technology employed by Microsoft Access databases. Therefore, disk sector editors and other software would not be able to make any sense of your documents.

You can further protect documents with a user name and password. This means your document cannot be opened by anyone else using the document designer software. But it can be opened (but not modified or edited) by any user of the reviewer software.

Ideas:

Inform! documents have a lot of features that allow great flexibility in organizing and presenting your information with a lot of user interaction.

Here are a few examples of the many types of document you can create with I_Design:

  • Multimedia Xmas cards and letters: One window can contain a lot of information - a single text box can contain the equivalent of dozens of printed pages of text, and in one window you can display a lot of pictures. And you can have a combo box in a window that can contain hundreds of entries, each of which can be associated with a picture, a sound file, a video file, etc. and each of these can be opened for playing or display. A document with one page is all you need for a nice multimedia Xmas card or letter.

  • Slide show: You could make a document that consists of a single slide show that repeats indefinitely until the user stops it. Such a document would be useful for making announcements to employees or organization members at a main entrance, or for demonstrating a product or announcing product sales to customers in a store. In fact you could make a document that consisted of many indefinitely repeating slide shows.

  • Multiple slide shows: You could make a document that opens to a central page on which you display labels that have jumps to the beginning of any number of slide shows. When the slide shows are complete, the user is returned to the central page.

  • Interactive documents: You could create interactive novels, stories, or training modules. The first few pages could set the stage for a decision the viewer must make. Each decision could take the story along a different line. Such a document could consist of a combination of ordinary pages and slide shows. This type of document is ideal for trouble shooting guides, repair guides, and flow charting such as qualitative analysis in chemistry, or mineral identification in geology.

  • Photo albums: You could create a photo album with one photo per page in order by date/time taken and a text box on each page describing each photo. Then you could create as many indexes and outlines as you want to act like a filtering mechanism. For example, one outline could be devoted to birthdays, and another to vacations, and still another to family and relatives, and another to Xmas photos. Photos on specific subjects, or specific camera settings could be displayed via the search routines which apply to text in text boxes. A user could search for "flower", "tree", "mountain", or "Hawaii" photos in your album. You can make your own sound files to associate with each page to provide narration for your album.

  • Information directories: You could easily use Inform! to create an automated information kiosk, for example for a big city, a zoo, or large office building. The first or main page could consist of major subject headings, such as Dining, Entertainment, Transportation, Museums, Parks, Shopping, etc. When the user clicks on one of these subjects, a page is displayed that presents further choices. Dining, for example, could lead to a page that gives a breakdown of restaurants by type of food; Asian, Greek, Indian, Mexican, Italian, etc. The user could also use outlines, indexes, and search facilities to locate what he is looking for.

Inform! can be used to create very brief and simple, or very long and complex documents. If you want, you can create a multimedia encyclopedia, all in one file.
